Critical Arguments on Abortion

Abortion is an incredibly controversial topic that has been front and center in American society for many years.  Culminating with the Roe versus Wade decision made by the Supreme Court in the mid 1970s, there have been numerous critical arguments on abortion posed on a regular basis by individuals of all ages, races, and professions.  Arguments on abortion have been highlighted in religious, political, educational, and medical arenas.  Regardless of your specific ethical, religious, or political feelings on abortion, one must maintain an open minded approach to an argument on abortion in order to hear all possible sides of the argument.

The majority of critical arguments on abortion regard religious affiliations and decrees made by specific religious based groups.  Although many churches, synagogues, mosques, and other religious affiliations have been rethinking their stance on abortion, the majority of these groups have taken a steadfast stance against terminating a pregnancy.  Their arguments are based on specific teachings, doctrines, and dogma found within the chosen religion.  Often, these arguments may be based on an interpretation of a written text, such as the Bible in both the Old Testament and New Testament.

Many critical arguments on abortion deal with individuals with a specific ethical viewpoint regarding an unborn child.  Many individuals believe that life begins at conception and at the moment the egg is fertilized, the embryo is considered a child.  These individuals have a difficult time condoning terminating a pregnancy, since they see the child as a living human being instead of a mass of cells.  Individuals with ethical aversions to abortion may also have issues with the choice of terminating a pregnancy.

Many individuals feel, within certain parameters, that a woman’s choice is that of whether or not to be sexually active, not to decide to end an unwanted pregnancy that resulted from no or ineffective birth control measures.  Instead of disposing of a developing fetus, a woman should take all necessary measures to prevent pregnancy in the first place.

Whatever the argument, all critical arguments on abortion should be listened to and thought about in depth.  The point of posing arguments is to hear both sides of the story so that you can then make an educated decision on your stance for or against abortion as well as your choice to have or not to have an abortion.
