Male Depression

Male depression has been found to be characterized by irritability, aggressiveness, antisocial behavior, alcohol abuse, reduced impulse control and stress tolerance. The syndrome, which is not easily recognized and therefore seldom properly treated or prevented, seems to be related to central serotonin deficiency and hypercortisolaemia.  It darkens your thoughts, undermines your personal and professional life, and places you at increased risk of other illnesses. Most disturbing of all is that the risk of suicide is four times as great among depressed men as among depressed women

Male depression exhibits symptoms of hopelessness, insomnia, guilt and even experience periods of sadness.  Among most men a history of alcohol or drug abuse is common, although this has been debated. Drug and alcohol abuse has been found to mask depression, making the condition more difficult to diagnose. Approximately 40% of men in their 40s, 50s and 60s will experience some degree of lethargy, depression, increased irritability, mood swings, and difficulty in attaining and sustaining erections that characterize male menopause

As with other forms of depression the actual factors contributing towards male depression is not known. However some causes have been attributed to this condition. They are hormone deficiencies, alcoholism, smoking, hypertension, medications, poor diet, lethargy, cardiovascular conditions, and psychological problems.  There is general agreement that a general decline in male potency at mid-life can be expected in a significant proportion of the male population.

Medications and treatment procedures for male depression are often result oriented. Combination of spiritual, psychotherapy and anti depressant drugs give satisfying and long lasting results. There are a number of excellent antidepressant medications now available and it is important to choose and monitor them carefully.

Amphetamines and MAO Inhibitors, though rarely used, should be dispensed only under the advice of the physician. Tricyclic Antidepressants though are generic and cheap have a lot of side effects including sedation, dry mouth, and urinary retention. Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox etc are some of the drugs now widely used for male depression. They do not exhibit many side effects. All drugs and medications have a different character and profile of side effects so it may be necessary to try several different preparations to get the optimal response.

Some of the other drugs include Wellbutrin, Effexor, and Serzone.   These affect the brain chemistry through other biochemical pathways.
