Addiction and Rehab What Statistics Tell Us

Addiction and rehab, it is not abnormal to see these two words together. With the rising rate of drug abusers in today’s society, rehab facilities are available everywhere.

Rehab is mainly focused on helping approve an individual’s ability to recover from drug abuse. There is no guarantee that once a person entesr an addiction and rehab facility that they will re-enter society without the urge to ever use drugs again. Nor is an addiction and rehab facility a cure to drug abuse.  Drug abuse is associated with a person's mental stability--not just a drug's addictive qualities.

Once an individual decides to use drugs and then to abuse drugs, his or her body and mind becomes dependent on the drugs. It will take years to become stable and strong enough to fight the urge and temptation to use drugs. Statistics show that addiction and rehab facilities can help reduce the use of drug by 40 to 60 percent. The NSDUH, also referred to as the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, released a report in 2002, which stated that approximately over 22 million Americans, which equals out to over 9% of population, is in need of treatment for alcohol abuse and/or drug abuse. Out of the 22 million needing treatment, over 20 million, which equals out to more than 8% of the population did not seek treatment for their abuse and never received treatment.

Approximately only 1.5 million Americans reported they need for treatment for their abuse of alcohol and or drug. Out of the 1.5 million Americans who reported their need for treatment, approximately 445,000 reported their efforts to seek out treatment, though they failed to receive treatment. The remainder reported no effort or steps taken to receive treatment. Even more surprising, there were over 2 million reported teenagers between the age of 12 to 17 who needed treatment for alcohol and or drug abuse within the same year. Out of the 2 million, approximately only 185,000 youths received treatment, which left approximately 2 million teenagers who should have received treatment, but did not receive treatment for their drug abuse or alcohol abuse problem.
