Why Is Cancer Detection Important?

One of the diseases, which scares people the most and yet has maximum candidates lapped up is cancer. A layman knows that generally there are three stages of cancer, the first stage, second stage and the last stage. But is that all there is to cancer? The answer is no. There are different types of cancers and each has its own number of stages. But we aren’t doctors to know about all of them. That’s why we need to acknowledge the early signs of it and catch it before it grows beyond repair. Detection is easy and has similar symptoms no matter what the type. Having cancer is bad enough already, and by chance if you happen to miss out on its detection, promoting it to its next stage, then it may prove fatal.

Technical know-how

Cancer usually starts with abnormal cells starting to grow out of proportion and becoming uncontrollable. This results in formation of a lump known as a tumor. The abnormality of the cells can be attributed to genes, bad habits etc. The lump can be felt outside the body since it resembles a swelling. As soon as you find such a thing, you need to make haste towards the clinic.

It is not contagious and people need to dispel all their superstitions about the disease, because carrying such myths with you proves harmful not only for the treatment but also for the patient. There are basic two types of tumor one is benign and the other is malignant. Remember that malignant is a static tumor i.e. it does not spread to other parts of the body, and hence curable. But benign being non-static spreads to other body parts. Hence, when you remove the benign tumor it does not get cured because certain particles have already traveled across the blood stream to infect some other organ.

You know you are at risk when….

  • You have a history of cancer in your family.
  • You use or have used tobacco products.
  • You have had alcohol.
  • Have been exposed to hazardous chemicals.

If you find your situation resembling any of the above condition then you will need screening. Herein it means looking for cancer before its symptoms become visible. This screening varies according to your age group and risk condition.

All alert

Cancer may inflict you at birth itself. Both men and women run equal risk in this section. Women need to be careful about having breast cancer and cervical cancer. And men need to watch out for prostate and testicular cancer. These cancers are most common and 80% of the population comes under its threat zone. There are several other types of cancers- lung cancer, blood cancer, intestine cancer, skin cancer, colon and rectal cancer etc. Any of them can afflict you at any point of time, so you need to be aware always. Recognizing the symptoms, self- examinations and regular check ups at cancer clinics can provide a helping hand in keeping cancer at bay.
