Different Types of Acne Treatments

Because there are different types of acne, not all acne treatments are going to work for all cases of acne.  Most of the time, a combination of different types of acne treatment is necessary to rid oneself of acne.

There are two basic acne treatments: over-the-counter acne treatments and prescription acne treatments.  Over-the-counter acne treatments can be purchased at any drugstore or pharmacy. Prescription acne treatments, on the other hand, requires a doctor's approval.

Without specifically endorsing any particular over-the-counter treatment, most of them contain certain chemicals that fight acne.  These chemicals include:
* Benzoyl peroxide.  You've probably seem commercials for a dozen different over-the-counter acne treatments all containing benzoyl peroxide.  Benzoyl peroxide is what kills off all those acne-causing bacteria.

* Salicylic acid.  This is another ingredient in over-the-counter acne treatments.  This chemical helps to unclog pores on the skin.  The only problem is that the minute you stop using it, the pores become blocked again.  This goes for benzoyl peroxide too.
* Tea tree oil.  You can buy this over the counter as well.  It can be purchased on its own.

Prescription acne treatments can only be obtained from a doctor or dermatologist.  Prescription acne treatments are only used to treat moderate to severe acne.  Those who have just a few pimples are better served buying an over-the-counter medicine.  Some prescription acne treatments include:

* Isotretinoin.  This is arguably the most powerful of the different acne treatments available.  It decreases the amount of oil produced by the skin.  Side effects, however, include risk of birth defects if taken while pregnant.

* Antibiotics.  Antibiotics have been used to decrease the amount of bacteria in the skin.  The results of using antibiotics for acne are mixed.  The side effects include increased risk of antibiotic-proof bacteria, yeast infections, and heightened photosensitivity.

* Birth Control Pills.  Hormone medications, such as birth control pills, have been used as a treatment for acne.  They balance out hormone levels, as hormones are a cause of acne.  But there are risks to taking birth control pills either as an acne treatment or otherwise.  Risks include vaginal bleeding, retaining fluid, depression, and melasma.
